Knightwood BMX Club is a friendly, inclusive, volunteer-run BMX club based at Knightwood Leisure Centre in Chandlers Ford. Established in 2013, we welcome riders of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to those competing at Regional, National, European and World level. Our 148 members include children, adults, families and riders with disabilities, all benefiting from a supportive club that builds confidence, fitness, friendships and a lifelong love of sport.
The club is actively fundraising in order to finance the installation of permanent lighting around our BMX track for the dark winter months. Test Valley Borough Council has already supported the project by arranging an electricity supply to the track, and funding would help us take the next crucial step.
At present, we rely on battery-operated lights that can only be set out when a volunteer is available. These provide limited coverage, create dangerous shadows and leave parts of the track in darkness. Clear visibility is essential for rider safety, but also for parents, volunteers and members of the wider community using or passing the site. The battery-operated lights mean that someone has to be present to light the track which does not aid the entire community.
Permanent lighting would make training safer, extend access through winter, reduce the burden on volunteers and help us welcome more people into BMX. It would strengthen a grassroots club that already serves a wide local community and ensure riders of every age, background and ability can enjoy sport safely, confidently and more often.
All the money we raise we'll keep, plus we could win an extra £5,000, £2,500 or £1,500 if we're in the top three fundraising groups, plus all other groups still get £500 if we raise £2,000!
